Here is a quick video to give you a little something to thing about on this holiday! Let me know what you think.
Is It Luck?
Have you ever heard someone look at a person who was successful in an area (money, marriage, fitness, etc.) and say that they were lucky?
I’ll be honest. I used to think that when I was younger. Some kids are just lucky and are born into rich families or some people are just born with good genes that make them more fit.
I now realize this is faulty thinking.
While there are definitely things that are outside of our control, most people end up right about where they expect or even could be expected by others.
Let’s take finances for example. I realize that people who do well financially have specific habits which cause them to have financial freedom. Here are some of the things they do:
· Work hard
· Spend less than they make
· Stay positive
· Invest for the long-term
You see, these are all skills that can be learned. Someone can do this for 2 or 3 decades and someone will call them lucky.
Just as in my finances example, becoming more fit and healthy is a choice.
There will always be things that aren’t completely within our control like genetics.
Rather than use that as an excuse, focus on what you can control. Here are some of the habits that healthy and fit people do:
· Prioritize sleep
· 2-3 strength training sessions per week
· Eat breakfast
· 2-3 cardio sessions per week
· Stay positive
When we assume certain people are successful because of luck, it causes a negative cycle. Since we assume they are only successful because they’re lucky, we don’t implement the habits that will help us. Then we get poor results. Then we assume it’s because we’re unlucky. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy.
Rather than assume someone is lucky, try this instead. Within reason (becoming more fit is within reason), whatever someone else can accomplish you can too if you want it bad enough.
Why You Need a Coach
I’ve had so many coaches that have changed my life! In this video, I talk about all the areas I’ve had coaches in and why they are so important.
Everyone needs help! Don’t think you are worth it? Check out this video to confirm that you are and how to get help growing and getting better guidance towards your goals.
Why We Specialize In Small Group Training
You would only know this if we’ve been connected for a long time but TBBC used to offer large group training exclusively. In fact, it wasn’t uncommon for us to have up to 30 people in one session. We were having fun, helping people, and doing quite well. But then….
I entered the gym one day and was unhappy with what I saw.
Dozens of people were doing pushups but many of them flat out incorrectly. I didn’t blame the coach. It was just too much to handle.
I remember that day like it was yesterday. It was a dilemma indeed. Do I leave it as is? After all, people were happy and we were doing well. Or do we completely change the model? I knew this would be a lot of work and leave a decent amount of people unhappy.
After much contemplation, I couldn’t violate my values of why I got into this.
I really believed in the value and power of good coaching. We couldn’t offer it at that level. I don’t think anyone can.
After a variety of steps we arrived at our current model. We still offer team training but I think this is where the magic happens:
-
Groups of 2-6 (8 during prime time)
-
Members being coached at their level
-
Members feeling cared for (That’s what we hear)
-
Members don’t feel intimidated
-
Members have FUN!
When we first made the switch, I second guessed myself for a bit as it was much harder to make the switch. That is often what happens when we make the right decision. The harder way is usually the better way. Over time, there have been numerous times when the decision was confirmed.
I had 2 recent confirmations.
I was talking to a guy at a party and he said, “I was going to (insert large group franchise) and I’ve never gotten more hurt at a gym.” He was referring to all of the repetitive movements and lack of balance in the program.”
Another new member expressed the same sentiments. She said, “I went to (insert same large group franchise) and I was never corrected on my form.”
I hope I don’t come across as a hater. That’s not my intention, which is why I didn’t include the franchise name.
People are different and have different needs.
We are passionate about working with people who don’t want to just be a face in the crowd.
We get to know our members. Everything from their kids to any physical limitations.
If this is something that resonates with you, reach out because I’d love to chat!
If you are already a member, THANK YOU. Hopefully this serves as a reminder as to what makes us different.
Perhaps it will inspire you to also do the hard thing you know you need to do.

7 Ways to Measure Fitness Without the Scale
I was recently talking with a client who just started but was frustrated that she didn’t lose more weight.
I get it. I want fast results too.
I just think it’s a mistake to be only concerned with the weight on the scale.
Here are 7 other ways to know you’re headed in the right direction:
-
You have more energy – This is one of the first things that happens when new clients begin. Things that drained them before begin to feel easier.
-
Your clothes fit better – At this point you’re already starting to change body composition meaning you’re losing fat and gaining muscle.
-
You’re consistent with your workouts and nutrition – At this point, you’re not only getting in better shape but you’re becoming a better person.
-
You’re in a better mood and can handle stress better – This is one of my favorite benefits of being in shape. It helps you become more resilient meaning you bounce back quicker from challenges, failures, or adversity.
-
You’re moving better – Once you get on a proper program that addresses the main fitness components, you’re joints are less achey. Being more limber leads to increased productivity.
-
Your blood work is improved – We have clients that have lower blood pressure, improved cholesterol, and reversed diabetes. They are literally adding years to their lives.
-
You are STRONGER – Being stronger will improve the balance of your hormones, give you more confidence, improve your posture, and lower your chance for injury.
I think you would agree that these 7 benefits are solid whether they’re accompanied by weight loss or not.
So the next time you start feeling discouraged about your weight, look at this list and ask if you are experiencing some of these!
